Brookhaven Hamlet is one of those special places on southeastern shores of Long Island, New York. It has a variety of wildlife and diverse land conditions to support it. From the river and creeks to the shores of the Great South Bay, I was fortunate to grow up in in summers in the Hamlet. Summers made for a magical childhood. The open spaces and the many wooded areas and marshes provided a child with a perfect, natural playground to explore the world. My grandfather, who build the summer home in 1927, taught us to live with nature and not go against her. He and his friends very much cared for Brookhaven Hamlet and the surrounding areas and his legacy and values live on in his children and grandchildren as it is passed down. In the late 1960’s, they could see the development already starting to take over these precious lands and were very community focused for the well being of everyone.
Post Morrow Foundation was started in 1969 for the purpose of protecting the natural habitat, its wildlife, open spaces, as well as the heritage of the area. They have preserved much of the area in Brookhaven Hamlet as a result of their efforts. We are truly grateful to be able to access these some of these lands and photograph them. They have constant ongoing projects to allow access to areas and are working at rehabilitating a small cottage for use as a learning center in the near future Post Morrow continues to preserve this area and works with National Wildlife Refuge and New York State Dept of Conservation.
It is because of a collaborated effort, A Return to Nature has chosen The Post-Morrow Foundation to receive 10% of the proceeds on all purchases made through this site. You can also donate directly to The Post-Morrow Foundation through their site.
